What amount goes to local governments?

It is the legislature’s decision as to how those profits are distributed. According to state statute, whatever remains after the $60 million for the two pension funds goes to Build Indiana. Money from this fund is used not only to lower license plate excise taxes but also to fund infrastructure improvements and community-development projects that benefit Indiana’s 92 counties.

In fiscal year 2006, $158 million was transferred to Build Indiana. Through this June 30, a total of $2.2 billion has been distributed to the fund.

How much does the amount transferred to Build Indiana vary from year to year?

The amount varies depending on total lottery profits each year.
Has lottery income to the state steadily increased over the years?
No. While fiscal year 2006 set a new benchmark ($218.1 million) in the amount of net income, such income fluctuates from year to year. For example, the next-highest profit year was 1999, when the lottery earned $204.1 million.

How many lottery tickets are sold each year?

The Hoosier Lottery does not measure the sales of games by individual ticket, but by net sales for those games. Net sales in fiscal year 2006 totaled $816.4 million.

Broken down by game, sales were:

Scratch-off, $504.9 million; Pull Tab, $16.7 million; Powerball, $159.8 million; Hoosier Lotto, $65.6 million; Daily 3-4, $59.4 million; Lucky 5, $7.6 million, Mix & Match, $1.7 million; TV Bingo, $560,000; Raffle, $145,000.

The Hoosier Lottery Web site, in.gov/hoosierlottery, gives a breakdown of where each lottery dollar went in fiscal year ’06:

One cent to ads and promotions; 2 cents to salaries, administrative and other expenses; 10 cents to retailers and suppliers; 27 cents to the state; and 60 cents to players in the form of prizes.
